It's not like a hotel or an inn. For one thing, every B&B is different. They are as different as their owners are. Indeed, the difference between them makes staying at B&Bs exciting and fun. But sometimes not knowing what to expect can cause a problem. Typically, a bed and breakfast is the home of your hosts, and your hosts are people who enjoy sharing their home with others. The B&B owners live in one, private part of the house and the guest bedrooms are in another. Most B&Bs are small, mom-and-pop businesses that have from 2-5 bedrooms. Often, guests in two bedrooms will share a bathroom, just as you might do when visiting friends or relatives.
Unlike the anonymity of a hotel, a B&B usually provides a warm, friendly environment in which you can meet other guests as well as your hosts; also, your hosts can help you find and enjoy the special features of the area. On the other hand, privacy is highly valued at a B&B, and you are perfectly free to keep to yourself, or to lose yourself in the romance of a private twosome.
At any B&B, you should expect a clean environment, access to a bathroom, a bed with linens, clean towels, and a breakfast of some sort. From there on in, the details are as varied as are the personalities of Tom, Dick, and Jane. B&Bs range from the rustic and homey to the antique and historic to the exceedingly posh.
