The historic 18th century home became well known in the early 20th century as the College Club Inn, hosting such notables as Eleanor Roosevelt who made regular visits with her entourage. The inn was on the route to Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada where the Roosevelt family spent their summers. As noted in the inns journal, Mrs. Roosevelt particularly liked "the good food, the beautiful view of Penobscot Bay, the cleanliness and the lack of publicity."
