Surrounded by history, the Pickering House has welcomed visitors from near and far for more than 130 years. This engaging Victorian, with her onion-domed veranda, gingerbread trim and Italiante style belveder has stood the test of time to remain a beloved landmark in the old town of Olathe. Built in 1869, by one of Kansas' prominent political figures, The Pickering House was home to Major Isaac Orlando Pickering, his wife Celona and their 6 children for close to 100 years. This large family home was the center of hospitality and gracious living. An intrical part of Olathe's social life, the Pickering home was the scene of many receptions, dances, political discussions and garden parties. The Major often called his home "Old Liberty Hall" expressing the free-handed welcome to all who crossed its threshold, and never was hospitality gayer, warmer, more to be remembered than when the Pickerings gave a party. Today, as in days gone by, the Brumet family continue the tradition begun by the Pickerings by opening their home with the same free-handed welcome.
