Thankfully, Nottoway Plantation home escaped hurricane Katrina with no damage at all! All employees are alive and well. It was dreadfully hot, as the electricity was not restored until Saturday afternoon after the storm. While we did not suffer any structural damage to any of our buildings, small limbs and leaves covered much of our grounds. We were cleaning up for a couple of days: changing sheets and freshening up our 15 overnight guest rooms, picking up lots of leaves and small limbs on the grounds, removing the plywood from windows, opening up shutters, cleaning our coolers and freezers, etc. We were blessed to not have received any damage to the plantation mansion from Hurricane Rita as well. Just more leaves and limbs covering the grounds and parking lot.
WE ARE NOW OPEN FOR TOURS, AND THE RESTAURANT IS SERVING LUNCH AND DINNER! WE ARE AVAILABLE TO BOOK WEDDINGS, REHEARSAL DINNERS, AND PARTIES! At the edge of sugar cane fields, Nottoway stands overlooking the Mississippi River. This enormous mansion, completed in 1859, reflects an unusual combination. Greek revival architectural elements blend with innovations that were the fanciful desires of the original owner. Not only is the floor plan irregular, but the house contained many elements that were innovative and rare in the mid-19th century, such as indoor plumbing and hot and cold running water. Today Nottoway is open daily to the public. Take a guided tour, stay overnight, have dinner, perhaps even get married in this magnificent plantation!
