Magnolia House
757 Maple Avenue
New Martinsville, West Virginia

Magnolia House is an inviting Victorian home in the small West Virginia river town of New Martinsville. It was built in 1903 by the Duerr family and stands as one of the most elegant in the town to this day. There are 3 professionally-decorated guest rooms with both private and shared bathrooms. The guest rooms have a different phone number from the house, cable TV access, and direct Internet connection for the convenience and privacy of the guests. All beds are designed for maximum sleeping comfort, with featherbeds, luxury cotton sheets. The beds are made with down comforters and towel warmers are in the bathrooms for the colder months. The master suite, the Magnolia Room is quite large, with a corner bay-like window and work area, King bed, television with VCR, and phone. It has a private bathroom with a separate tub and shower and a Morning Room with its own small refrigerator and coffee maker. The middle-sized room is the Victorian Room, so named due to its classic-design furniture and decorations. This room can sleep two in either a King bed or double twins. The Southern Comfort Room, the third room, is a small one-person room with a sunlit window seat. The Victorian Room and the Southern Comfort Room share a full bath with a shower tub combination. The house is equipped with central heating and cooling and ceiling fans in each bedroom. Common areas in the house for relaxing and socializing include the parlor, the formal dining room, the den/library with a TV and VCR, the breakfast nook and either of two porches. A variety of trees are scattered throughout a large side yard which circles behind the house where a stone patio grill is available for outdoor functions. The house is spacious enough for your relaxation, yet cozy enough for that “at home” feel. We understand that you may wish a different presence from the innkeeper for a wedding night than for a weekend away from the city. We offer all options for breakfast, from a full candlelit gourmet to self-serve Continental, eaten either in the formal dining area or the cozy in-kitchen breakfast nook with large windows overlooking the yard. Long-term stays are welcomed, with separate kitchen facilities available for food storage and cooking access for meals other than breakfast. We cater to the busy business traveler by helping with special arrangements such as hostess or take-home gifts. Laundry service is available upon request. Magnolia House is smoke-free. New Martinsville is within a one-hour drive to the West Virginia river towns of Wheeling, Moundsville, Paden City, Middlebourne, Sistersville, St. Mary’s, Parkersburg, and Williamstown and the Ohio river towns of Sardis, Fly, New Matamoras, Hannibal, Clarington, and Marietta. A full day’s activity could include a drive to Marietta, Ohio to enjoy sightseeing, antique shopping, and a dusk dinner cruise aboard a paddleboat. Other daytime activities could include a trip to the local bee farm in nearby Proctor, Thistledew Farm. The Mountain Craft Shop, featuring the American Folk Toys which are the brainchild of Dick Schnake is now a part of this farm. If scenery is your passion, take a covered bridge tour or drive the ridge roads up into the hills to enjoy the fantastic scenery characteristic of the Ohio River Valley. Or we’ll arrange a picnic lunch for you to enjoy next to the majestic Ohio River where you can lazily watch the passing of the river traffic. Evening activities could include a romantic candlelit dinner in the house arranged especially for you followed by an evening in front of the fireplace. Or the evening may be better suited to socializing at the downtown pub and coffee shop. You might attend one of the theatrical productions at New Martinsville’s Lincoln Theater, which was once visited by Gloria Swanson for the opening of her movie Star Struck. Do you need a romantic retreat, a relaxing getaway, or help during a stressful business trip? Let Magnolia House be your host.
