Boating The river is an important part of life in the Delta and you can have the opportunity to experience it. Whether you want to rent a canoe, take a “bannock ” cruise, or spend an evening on The Barge, we can help you to arrange your outing either before you leave or once you get here.
Fishing World class fishing experiences are close at hand in the Beaufort Delta Region. Stop by a creek on the side of the highway, or fly-in to a more isolated lake, or maybe go jigglin' on the ice in the spring.
Scenic Tours Take the Tuk Tour and dip your toe in the Arctic Ocean, visit the grave of the Mad Trapper of Rat River in Aklavik, photograph wild flowers at Herschel Island, visit a traditional camp, or travel the ice road in winter to Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik. Inuvik walking tours should always include: the Igloo Church, the Community Greenhouse (open May through September), Inuvik Visitor's Centre, Inuvik Centennial Library (check out the Northern Collection!!), Ingamo Hall Friendship Centre, Boot Lake Trails (Jimmy Adams Peace Park), and of course all our local shopping on Mackenzie Road. Fort McPherson, and Tsiigethchic are accessible by road winter and summer, Tuktoyaktuk and Aklavik are accessible by road in the winter and air in the summer. Sachs Harbour, Paulatuk, Holman are only accessible by air.
Eating Out Inuvik features some world class eating opportunities. Don't forget to try the Northern fare including Musk-ox, Caribou, and Char at our local dining establishments, or maybe join the community at one of our feasts (watch for local advertising).
Driving Whether you come in the summer or fall to cross the Arctic Circle on the Dempster Highway, or in the winter to drive further north on our ice road system to Aklavik and Tuktoyaktuk, driving in the Mackenzie Delta can take you to a new vista around every bend. If you are flying in to Inuvik, there are several rental agencies that will be happy to outfit you with a vehicle for a day or a week. In the summer, RV rentals are also a possibility leaving either from Alberta, British Columbia or the Yukon. Note river crossings at Fort McPherson and Tsiigehtchic are seasonal! ”“ ice road in the winter and ferries in the summer ”“ there are shoulder seasons in spring and fall where no crossing is available at these locations. Contact the GNWT Highways Department for current road conditions.
Cross Country Skiing World class, fully lit, cross country ski trails get you out into the bush to experience the Arctic first hand.
Boot Lake Trail, Jimmy Adams Peace Park A walking trail that begins right in Inuvik and takes you out around the lake to view scenic lookouts, wild flowers, or our spectacular sunrise, sunsets and Northern Lights in winter.
Sledding & Dog Mushing Local tour operators offer sledding and mushing experiences for you weather permitting. A great way to experience the North.
