Other Amenities Details
The scenic south central British Columbia region between the Okanagan and the Kootenays is called Boundary Country, because of its proximity to the Washington, United States, border. Highway # 3 transverses East â€â€œ West and a number of border crossings make it an easily accessible area. The rural area is ranch land and mountainous timber country, with rivers and lakes in abundance. Towns like Grand Forks, Greenwood, Rock Creek and Midway provide the services to the residents and visitors. Wildlife abounds in the Boundary. Whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, elk, bear, cougar, and coyotes are just some of the wildlife that may be seen and birders will be delighted with the variety of birds in the area. This used to be mining country as well, and while there are still gold claims and placer operations throughout the region, most of the â€Ëœbig operations' are now history. Greenwood is today the smallest City in BC, if not in Canada and the pioneer buildings and remnants of prosperous days are still visible. Railroads traversed the area to bring ore to smelters and the abandoned rail beds make excellent hiking, biking and riding trails. The Trans-Canada Trail is in the backyard of Boundary Country and hundreds if not thousands of cyclists ride the Kettle Valley Railroad line and admire the huge trestles safe to cross. In the winter, downhill skiing and snow boarding is offered at Phoenix Mountain, Mt. Baldy and Big White. X-country too is available. Snowmobiling along the rails and logging roads gives excitement for hundreds of miles. Campgrounds, B&Bs and Guestranches, together with traditional motels and historic hotels provide accommodation.
