The Greek Revival raised cottage was built as a beach house in the early 1800's by wealthy New Orleans planters and is considered to be the finest example of period architecture in South Mississippi. It is Mississippi's oldest remaining beachfront residence. Originally built on a Spanish Land Grant, the home retains two of it's original 640 acres and two historic buildings. Today, the home and original Servants Quarters are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and provide for a total of seven guest rooms with every modern comfort.
Green Oaks has been restored to it's original splendor and is furnished with an impressive collection of family heirlooms and period antiques many of which have historical significance. The home retains all of it's original moldings, mantels, hardware and fixtures. On the cypress beams you can see the adz marks where all of the logs were hand hewn. The foundation has never been excavated and remains a mystery, but a structural analysis shows the home has not settled a centimeter in the attic. Due to its design and the location of the barrier islands in front of the home, it has withstood many powerful storms and is one of the few antebellum structures remaining on the Gulf Coast.
Green Oaks Bed & Breakfast has been featured in over 20 National Magazines including Southern Living, Travel & Leisure, Travel Holiday and Delta Sky Magazine (Pictured on the right).
