Galop House Bed and Breakfast
10488 County Road #2
Iroquois, Ontario

You'll find history served up with panache at Galop House Bed and Breakfast. What a spot. Fittingly, it's close to Upper Canada Village. And if you're travelling along the Toronto to Montreal corridor it's convenient to the highways but far enough down a country lane to be away from any traffic noise. It's even worth making this bed and breakfast a destination if you're going to be in The Thousand Islands region of Gananoque and Brockville. When you pull up you'll realize the first reason to come. This French country-style house is built on seven acres of forest and farmland on the shores of the St Lawrence River. And, yes, the views are splendid. Then there are hosts Elaine Jamieson and Gerry Leckie who go the extra mile for their guests. All day, my friend and I looked forward to the wine and cheese proffered to those who arrive by 5 PM. Then, after we came back from dinner, we helped ourselves to a delicious petit four on the hall table. Mention of dinner brings up the only wrinkle ”“ while there are several restaurants within a short drive the best one is close to half an hour away. Unfortunately, it's closed Mondays, when we were there, so we had to make do. Evidence of Elaine and Gerry's love of local history is found throughout the house and it's all very tastefully done. The bright living room with stone fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows invites lively conversation or quiet contemplation. Upstairs, there are four attractive bedrooms. Two offer en suite bathrooms and look directly out onto the St Lawrence. The largest of these is the English Countryside Room with queen size bed and rich mahogany furnishings dramatically paired with a red toile print. Its large window affords a dramatic view. Next to it is the smaller French Provincial Room with a vibrant blue and yellow colour scheme and pineapple post twin beds. Same view, but through a smaller window. A cafe table and two small chairs sit by the window. Two other rooms share a bathroom but enquire about upgrading to private use if you like. At one end of the hall, adjacent to the shared bath, is the American Colonial Room, also with a queen-size bed, done in forest green with maple furnishings. Even from here you can see the St. Lawrence. The fourth double-bedded room, United Empire Loyalist, faces the back. It has a charming white-on-white colour scheme. As for breakfast, it made up for any food angst we had the night before. Elaine and Gerry set up a buffet with juice, cereal, fruit and the like. Coffee is help-yourself. Then there are the specialties Elaine whips up. We had a delicious dish with eggs, ham and cheese. I could easily have had a couple of extra servings but I held off when I saw the home-made gingerbread with whipped cream. As a foodie I couldn't ask for better.
