Carole Lombard was born Jane Alice Peters, in this house at the foot of Rockhill Street October 6th, 1908. This beautiful home overlooks the Saint Mary's River near the Carole Lombard Memorial Bridge which crosses the river at Main Street.
In 1938, upon the release of her movie Nothing Sacred, Harry Baals, then Mayor of Fort Wayne had a plaque affixed to the house proclaiming the house a landmark. Click here to view some of the interior of the house.
The West-Central Neighborhood has had it's up and downs. When the house was finished at the turn of the century (it was built by her grandfather) the neighborhood was a dwelling place for the city's upper class. But in the 1930's, the wealthy began to leave for more spacious lands in the surrounding countryside. These stately homes began to fall into disrepair. Most were divided into apartments and rented. In the 1980's, there was a strong movement in Fort Wayne to restore these beautiful homes, and today they are proud statements of Fort Wayne's rich heritage.
