Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

Bancroft Manor was built in 1909 by J. Bancroft Swayne who founded the area's mushroom farming industry in the late 19th century (Washington Post 1/2/2001 & kennett.pa.us/history). The house is predominantly Queen Anne style with elements of the Classical Revival period. Architectural features include Avondale stone walls, slate and tin roofs, lead glass windows and dormers, wrap-around porch and enclosed sun porches, Tuscan columns, high ceilings, hardwood floors, crown molding, original wallpaper, and fireplace. The rooms are tastefully decorated in period antiques and fixtures. Located in the National Historic District of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Bancroft Manor Bed & Breakfast is on a quiet street yet conveniently located fewer than four blocks from fine dining and elegant shopping, the nationally-ranked Kennett Area YMCA, and Nixon Park. It is also minutes away from Brandywine Valley attractions like Longwood Gardens, Brandywine Battlefield, Brandywine River Museum, Winterthur, and Hagley Museum to name a few. Bancroft Manor is a two-time, first place winner of Kennett Square's Christmas Decorating contest. Stay here and see why it is one of the finest in architectural styling and hospitality.
